iMovie for Mavericks

Avatar Eric Jervis
Having succeeded in making Pages do all that for which I formerly used InDesign, I was determined to buy a Mavericks version of iMovie so that I might pension off the old G5. The difference is that in all the bad reviews of the new Pages it was obvious that the people complaining were upset that they were unable to import their work from the previous version into the new. For persons such as I who'd not used the old version, the new is satisfactory. A bit crude, certainly, compared with InDesign, but eminently usable. I was hoping that this would also be the case with iMovie. I looked at all the reviews last night and, although there is some evidence of this, almost everybody is cursing it. I am therefore reluctant to allow myself to be swindled out of £10.99. Has anyone else used the new app on Mavericks and found it OK? I shall not want to import old projects into it. Failing that, what is the latest version of iMovie that a man in my position can use?

HI Eric
I have both 9 & 10. They are both easy and great to use. !0 came free with Maverick and is geared to
social media sharing. I prefer to use 9 so I can choose a huge number of export settings not available
on 10 yet. If you want to see them running together come and see me in Weymouth. I will not be at the next meeting. 2 ops on the 14.

I have both 9 & 10, but prefer to use 9 as I find much easier to use, having edited 8 of my old home movies with 9. When I tried to do it on 10 I got completely lost, lucky I had them backed up. So if you have 9 stick with it

Thank you gents, good luck with those ops Graham; I'm afraid Weymouth's a bit of a trot from Portreath but I shall certainly be at the next Truro meeting!
I like your idea Doug, but there's nothing like iMovie in my apps folder, probably because I got Mavericks free, having bought a Mac with Mountain Lion already on it. Version 9 sounds like the answer but is it still possible to buy it?

I imported a tape from the DV camera into iMovie 9 and produced a small film from it. When I came to 'share' it I had two options; Quicktime movie or an mp4. When I came to burn the mp4 Toast gave me two options (All your content is in NTSC format) to burn an NTSC disc or convert it to normal. I tried both of these and both of them were extremely pixilated. So I did a Quicktime one, and that played perfectly.
I then bought the latest iMovie from the app store, imported the project into it, and burned an mp4 disc, which played perfectly. It actually seemed a bit better, but might have imagined that.

I think I must have been very lucky when I did that, possibly because the film was only 90 seconds long. With a lot of help from Doug I've since tried to make a much longer one and have spent quite some time tearing my hair out. I have reached the following conclusions: 1- iMovie 9 will not work with Mavericks. 2- iMovie 10 won't work with it either and is a complete disaster as it keeps crashing. I tell myself this is good news really, as Apple might in the fullness of time fix it, but I shall not be holding my breath. Conversely, I am frequently wrong so I await your further comments Gentlemen.
