Pages '09 - how to stop documents auto updating the date

Avatar David Fleetwood
Hopefully a quick query. I'm sure there is a way but can't find it, to stop the date on documents (esp. letters) changing to the current date. We want to keep the original date the item was created.

Hi David, I’m assuming that you are using the templates offered by Pages, since on a “blank” page dates are text, no more, no less. (Pages wouldn’t automatically alter “Dear Sir” to “Most Honoured Ruler of the Customer Service Department” — or would it? Perhaps as Morphicskeuing, or a subversive move by Huawei?)

In Pages '09
type your own "reference" date (e.g. 30th October 2013) to replace the "given auto" date (e.g. 2nd November 2013) in the date slot on a chosen template -- and your "reference" date stays there once the file has been saved just as the body text etc. do. At least that's what happens here in the wild west.

in Pages v5.0
(the latest version, free with Mavericks if you have had iWork installed under a previous OS X setup), click on the "given auto" date and a dialogue appears with a mini calendar which makes life even easier (or messier) depending how close to California you happen to live. Otherwise as for ’09.

N.B. while the new iWork apps are being rewritten to tie in better with iOS7 iWork apps, some features are missing and some have been added. Therefore the iWork update automatically leaves your original iWork apps in your Applications folder while adding the new versions. It seems that the process is similar to that adopted when Apple started to rewrite the code base of their professional Movie editing software, leaving a trail of complaints from Video Professionals about missing features. Most of these have been added back since then as code has been rewritten. Not even Apple can do everything instantly.

If all else fails you could always make a new text box to replace the auto date box and type your date in that, or maybe relax with some of Mrs Fleetwood’s legendary Irish stew?

If your Mac can use it you will enjoy Mavericks, it's as smooth and velvety as a well-poured Guinness.
