Western Digital -My Book- goes AWOL

Avatar John Marriott
Hi folks
Switched on the iMac today and the time machine back up volume refused to show on the desktop.
Checked: 1) Connections-ok. 2) Alternative USB port on iMac- made no difference. 3) Tried a restart on both iMac and My Book no joy there. 4) Reset Time machine settings - no joy.
Have now run out of ideas other than a new drive. If that is the only solution does anyone know how to retrieve the info on defunct drive. By the way all my work is backed up on another volume.

Do you have any lights or other signs of life on the drive? Does it have a separate power supply? Could be that rather than the drive.

Hi Mick
All lights are ON as normal and the power supply is okay. Have now tried it on the MacBook, still no joy.

Can Disk Utility see it? If not, my guess would be the drive inside the box has died.

The icon is there but when I try to repair disc it cannot be found!
The funeral is Wednesday @ 3pm, all welcome, but no flowers just donations to me, cheques accepted!

If you are serious about recovering data from the drives try
Dataquest International

They gave us a good talk at one of the Fareham meetings recently.

Thanks for that info Derek just might give it a go later. In the meantime will use my back up drive to recover the important files and then purchase a new drive.
