Marks and Spencer...

Avatar Terry Willis
While on one of our shopping trips, we called into Marks and Spencers at Hedgend, Southampton. It seems to be one of our regular ports of call, so I was particularly pleased to see that they now sale Apple iMacs and MacBooks along with a range of iPods, including the iPod Touch within their technology department.

Interestingly they were also sold with a two year guarantee, similar to John Lewis, which beats Apple's own one year guarantee!

Seems shopping doesn't have to be all bad...!

I was at an exhibition in London at the beginning of November and was talking to a company who run IT training courses including Apple ones. They were in the middle of running Mac courses for M&S staff. Even I could work out why ;-)

How times have changed. When all our friends were still using PC's running DOS, we would happily travel to London or even Gordon Harwoods in Derby to buy Apple kit.

Looking forward in anticipation to the trip, and once there, being recognised and treated almost as a member of a club by knowledgeable people that knew all about the kit they were selling.

How different it is now. Five minutes down the road and 'iMac sir, certainly – small, medium or large'. Next customer please.

In the main, I like M&S and you can't fault their returns policy. But I can't help feel Mac enthusiasts have lost something along the way.

My recollection was slightly different when I wanted to buy my first iMac from a local Mac specialist. Two appointments failed to produce an iMac I could see never mind try. The more outlets for Macs the better. A little price competition would be nice too.
