Free Router

Avatar Roy Rainford
TalkTalk are offering me a free wireless router, saying that my present one (Netgear DG834G v3) is not providing the best performance. The Netgear one seems ok to me and I wonder if TalkTalk are trying to get me 'hooked' into a long-term contract? I don't like to miss a genuine offer worth £45.99 see http://devices.dslshop.co.uk/View/Huawei-HG533 but I am suspicious of "free" offers. There are no free lunches! Anyone had the same offer or have views about the router? Roy

If you search on the router make & model number you'll find lots of TalkTalk forums (is it made especially for them?) including a TalkTalk page with a list of known issues.

Thanks Mick. Having Googled around a little it seems a genuine offer of the latest router technology. However I don't feel inclined to change when things are OK. "If it's not broken don't fix it" thinking! One article I read was: http://recombu.com/digital/news/router-wars-talktalk-vs-bt-sky-virgin-orange_M11216.html

As you know Roy I am with Talk Talk and as yet I haven't been offered a new router, if you take up the offer I would like to know how you get on

I too have been with TalkTalk for some years using Netgear routers rather than their own. Recently I upgraded to a package with them that includes films and television via a new router that they installed. It's an Huawei HG533 and, unlike the previous situation, I haven't dropped a signal since.
I don't know the reason for the improvement - perhaps its the new router or stuff I don't understand about the feed to the router.

That's interesting Mark thanks. I might after all be tempted by a freebie! Roy

What a waste of time! After two emails from TalkTalk saying, " I'm glad to be able to tell you that you have been selected to receive one of our new, most powerful wireless broadband routers completely free of charge and without any conditions."
I decided to have the "freebie" and logged in to obtain it. A message then appears, "Our test show your router doesn't need replacing at this time" but - you can buy one for £49.95!!!!!
A new slant on a marketing ploy! No I didn't buy one.
