Weird message from Pages

Avatar Mark Ford
I am at a loss to know the significance of this message that 'flapped down' onto my work in Pages:

The document named Untitled 5 could not be autosaved. The file has been changed by another application. Click Save Anyway to keep the changes made by the other application as a version, or click Revert to keep the changes from the other application and save your changes as a version.

I had dragged in a picture that had been edited in Aperture and written seven words in a text box under it.
I can't remember which option I clicked but I was able to get on with my task.

Does anyone have any idea what that was about - does it matter?

Snap!

It didn't make sense to me either. I didn't bother with it and everything worked out OK.

Maybe more agile minds will be able to interpret for us.

Had this system message too once or twice, can't remember which software was in use. For discussions on this, google: "file has been changed by another application. Click Save Anyway"

Although sparse, comments date back to February 2012. It appears to relate to saving to Dropbox or the Cloud (in general), or to situations where two copies of the file are "in use" at the same time such as when synching between OSX and IOS. The cause "may" relate to Apple's Sandbox technology which hides file code from the unwanted attentions of malware.

The long hoped-for iWork update or Mavericks may sort out this out. Meantime it isn't clear which response to the system alert is most appropriate (experience varies) so my work-around is to < option-save > ('save as' under 10.8) with a new version number.

For what it's worth, I don't use the Cloud, and seldom need to use Dropbox.

I have gotten to the bottom of it, I think. I can reproduce it at will now, and here is how to do it: http://www.timefold.com/autosavebug/ At that URL are the instructions to follow and a movie of me causing this bug to occur.

Another common workflow that can lead to this problem is pursuing a syntax error. If you click on a syntax error in the warning pane it will go directly to the file and you are tempted to edit it. But, alas, if the file is already open in another window or tab you are vulnerable to this problem. Similarly, when the debugger stops at a breakpoint it will jump to the breakpoint in whatever window is in the foreground, which can also cause there to be two windows open the file. Other than these, I've succeeded in avoiding the problem entirely, and in any case I've lost no more work.
