Help please - email fault

I haven't received an email or sent one for a few days - unusual. Have tried to send today but no joy. This is the same on my iMac (OS 10.6.8), also on an older iMac and iPad. (Mail is v 4.6.). I can access the internet, as this message proves!Network prefs show Airport is connected but Ethernet and Firewire are not.
A network dialogue box has come up saying, "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address".
I use a Netgear router DG834G v3. There are three green lights showing on the router but none of the four numbers are 'alive'.
I have unplugged and replugged the router and have restarted the iMac but still no joy.
Any suggestions as to what I should check now?
