Bluetooth invisibility

Avatar Michael Corgan
Having changed the batteries in my Apple Trackpad, Bluetooth is now seeing it but no longer connecting with it. Ditto my iPhone. The phone is turned on and discoverable, is also showing on the Bluetooth listing, but will not connect. It connects very easily with the Bluetooth in the car. What am I not doing ? Or put it another way, what do I need to do to get these two items connected with my iMac?

Is Bluetooth switched on and have you enabled Bluetooth Sharing in System Preferences? The low tech solution of turn it off, wait a few seconds and turn it on again often works. My wireless keyboard sometimes loses connection when the Mac wakes from sleep and I have to do this to make it discoverable again. When replacing the batteries, were they replaced the right way round? Maybe try other batteries.I only mention the last because I made that mistake not long ago. The Bluetooth menu shows anything that has been paired with your Mac not just the devices currently connected

Good answer Lionel - in part anyway. Changed the batteries in the track pad and it is back. But no change in thenstatus of the iPhone, which cannot find the iMac

I have been lead to believe that you can't connect an iPhone to a Mac or another phone via bluetooth

Seems as if you hear right Doug. The following was on an Apple discussion site in Australia and may also apply top connecting iPhones to Macs:

'I visited an Apple Store yesterday to seek some advice and assistance. The answer is that you cannot connect an iPhone4 and iPad(3) via Bluetooth. They will pair, but not connect.
Apparently Apple think that they cannot trust their user base not to be rampant pirates and do all sorts of illegal file transfers.
It would have saved me a headache if the error could have been "Stop doing that you pirate!" rather than "Make sure iPad/iPhone is turned on and in range" '

However, I DID manage to get the iPhone 4s to connect and pair with the iMac by turning on Personal Hotspot in Settings, turniong the iPhone off and on again and following through the instructions tha came up. I was hoping to be able to dial out automatically via my Organiser program as I used to when I was using a modem and not a router/modem, but got the message that the program cannot find any serial services in the iPhone. Ho hum.
