Scanner

Avatar Drew McFarlane
I am fairly certain that all or at least 99% of our members own some form of Apple product, I don’t suppose we would have joined the club if we didn’t. Again I am fairly certain that we have paid over £100 for our products some well over £2000.

I was flabbergasted last night at the Dorchester meeting, I would be grateful if someone will explain why the club is being asked to finance a scanner to enable some members to scan their 35mm slides? Surely it is up to an individual to purchase his/her own scanner?

It was said that all of our members would benefit from this scanner, we could borrow it for a week at a time? If we all wanted to borrow it, it could take at least two years to go round everyone.

In the event of a malfunction, who is going to pay for it to be repaired? In this day and age it is more often or not, cheaper to purchase a new piece of equipment rather than repair the original. I ask, if the scanner was broken, would the person who broke it be prepared to replace it?

My feelings are that this idea should be scrapped, those who want to scan their slides, should club together and buy a scanner or as I would do, buy my own. After all it was stated that they only cost £150 from John Lewis or Maplins.

I guess the thinking is that people would generally have a one- off need for a 35mm scanner, rather than a regular requirement. As for how long the queue might get, many of us have already put off tackling this chore for 10 years or more, so waiting a bit longer probably won't be an issue!

Our scanner has a 35mm adapter built in so I'm not going to be joining the queue but even so, it doesn't strike me as an unreasonable idea.

Trevor I had the same attachment a neg reader that came with my old scanner which worked very simply and with excellent results. However it is over 10 years old and has recently given up the ghost so I am now looking for a new one. It was an Epson Perfection 1250 and cost about £60 with the neg attachment .........can anyone suggest a similar combination of scanner and neg reader at a reasonable price ?

Many Thanks

Tom

Ours is a Canon MP760, no longer a current model I afraid.

Thanks Trevor ....did a bit of research and see that the Epson Perfection range is still going and has all the neg reading stuff with them as these types of scanners seem to be very popular now for specifically transferring family slides and photos to digital.

Would one not get a better result with a slide copying attachment for an SLR?
