Satnav apps

Avatar John Surtees
We noticed that the September Salisbury meeting, featured a demo/talk of the TomTom satnav app on the iPhone. While waiting for our stand-alone TomTom to give up the ghost, we thought we would try the free app called Navfree, as back-up. While it doesn't have all the features of a stand alone TomTom, it's great for the times when we forget to put the TomTom in the car. We've run the two units at the same time and there is very little difference between them. The major differences we've found is that whereas TomTom tells you when to turn off a roundabout at the desired point, the Navfree only tells you which exit to take as it approaches the roundabout. Also there is no speed camera alert. But it has a very nice lady who provides the spoken instructions through the cars audio system, quietening any music you may be playing from the iPhone. This app became much more usable from around May this year when Postcode destinations became available.

You should have been there John! I've just bought the app and it's a big leap forward from my very old stand-alone. I don't connect the phone to the car's audio system but Annie assure me that the Tom Tom cradle is excellent. At present I'm just using a Halfords holder (cheapskate that I am). I'm actually using it with CamerAlert which has a free trial - you may find it works with yours too.

I've replaced the prvious version, and while the new one looks much snappier, it isn't able to find my address or anything near, and doesn't take me to a specific destination, but to within a street, which I suppose is bearable. Also there seems to be no way to cancel a route once it has been entered. All advice welcome (as alway!
Oh and trying to report a bug is a circular process - you enter the details, but there is no way to send them and you go back to the beginning!

Don't blame Tom Tom for living where you do ;-)

It took me a few presses to find out how to delete a route - it's under Route Options and then Clear Route.

I've found the navigation to be pretty good so far. Last week, using just a post code, it got me to within 50yds of a house on an unmade road in Winchester. Mind you, it didn't warn me the road was unmade!
