iOS 6 Maps

Avatar Alan Lewer
If like me you don't like the new maps, then it is possible to revert to iOS 5 to get back Google maps.
This website (and others!) gives info how:

I've done this on my iPhone 4 and have reverted ok - using backup to restore iPhone settings - it takes some time and some settings are lost eg wifi.

Thanks Alan, the new Maps is dreadful and the loss of Street View is not simply cosmetic and is no small thing. its not until one looses something that its worth becomes clear - this pm I wanted to show a friend my sons new house in Oz on my iPad - I had been able to see it last weekend but its simply not possible now. Not the end of the world but a distinct step backwards .
The idea that it is a work in progress is just not on - its simply tacky. I read a suggestion that it will improve through crowd sourcing - just peel back the curled corner and click on 'Report a problem' - seems a real cheek. I am embarrassed that Apple should have rushed out such a tacky and inferior product in pursuit of what seem to be a commercial war with Google.

If you go to Google Maps via Safari on the iPhone then you will be presented with a tab that loads an Ap that sits on the iPhone that invokes Safari direct into Google Maps you can see the various layers and also get directions -

Yes, thanks Derek, I did that but am unable to get Street View which was the feature I missed particularly.
How did you manage to get it?
The Street View function of Google Maps is still available in OS X 7 via Safari.
There is a separate App called Street View for £1.99 that slated as rubbish in all the reviews.

Mark, did you actually have street view on an IOS device?

The war with google is full on now. You can can navigate to www.maps.google.com on your iPad browser, and then tap the action button, and tap add to home screen, and you will have an icon on your iPad that will take you to the old maps. ( sort of)

Are you aware of the two finger swipe to tilt the Ios 6 apple maps, and a three finger rotate? Two items google never had. And the directions are pretty slick too, but could use improvements.

It seems that Google StreetMap may be about to return to an iPhone near you in a relatively short while.

This is a useful summary:

Looks as if Apple have noticed the dismay with a list of alternative mapping
Apps - but still no Street View (which was certainly available in iOS). Lots of interesting
speculation about
I have been busy updating the bits of map that I know and it will be
interesting to see how long/if my suggestions are included - Maiden Castle and
The Agglestone will be good tests.

According to Walt Mossberg of AllThingsD Street View is now available in a browser in iOS and a stand alone App is being prepared for the 'end of the year'.
I have tried the former and it is fine although one does not get access to Street View on the landing page.
In order to get the small symbol of a person that gives access one needs to enter a place name and when the map changes and a red pin appears the figure also appears on a strip along the bottom of the screen.
A bit clunkier than it once was but Street View is there.

For anybody using the RAC and AA traffic information apps and the National Trust app on iOS6, beware! These are using the new Apple Maps app - check it out by looking at West Bay, Bridport. The harbour name is shown at the western edge of the town a good mile and a half from the actual harbour, and setting a route to West Bay will take you to the map location. Don't know if there are any other apps doing this - thank goodness the Good Pub Guide doesn't, so all is not lost!
