Contact Address Layout

I have just printed some mailing labels and they are inconsistent. On some the details (cells) are shown line by line as normal but on others the cells are side by side on one line. They differ in this way in Contacts (mustn't refer to Address Book any more). This is not me entering two or more items in a single cell. I may/must be missing something but wondered if it depends what OS was being used when data was first entered. Any ideas?
