Air Printing

Avatar Douglas Cheney
I am trying to use a program called Printopia and find that my iPhone finds no printer when using the wifi on my router. If I create a network from the wifi menu the my iPhone finds my printer. The instruction that come with the program mentions that the router may not be Bonjour compatible or may be on a different subnet, can any one explain this and what I might be able to do to the router settings. I am running Mountain Lion and the router is a Netgear DG834PN

Hi Doug. I recently asked TalkTalk to change my router -- which they did: from a Huawei to a D-Link (low end domestic model). More secure and a bit faster too. At the same time I lost my laser printer whose connection path is Mac > wifi > Router > ethernet cable > printer.

The printer worked fine on a straightforward ethernet direct cable, but was not "seen" via the router and wifi.

Cause? the D-Link router didn't know about the protocol used by the printer as originally set up by the factory which relied on DHCP negotiation.

My Godson fixed this for me by using the also available "LPR" protocol with the printer's own (fixed) URL which can be recognised by the D-Link router.

I have no idea how you can apply this fix to your problem, but it may encourage someone else to offer detailed advice. Good luck!

I can now print from my iPhone with help from Ecamm the program maker. It was just a few alterations to my router settings

On the subject of wireless printing from iPhone, iPad or even Mac. I bought an Epson SX535WD a while back and it performs very well. It's available for under £80 and for a multifunction device it's very good value. It also scans wirelessly and does a very good job as a copier.
