iCloud

Avatar Judith Smith
I am running Mountain Lion on my iMac G5 and am trying to use iCloud but with no success. The only calendar events I have left now are birthdays and the number for each entry has now increased to 4 for each one. My iPad calendar has also been erased and to my horror, today all my contacts have disappeared from my iMac. Please can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.

It is surprising that you were able to load Mountain Lion or even Lion on an iMac G5because these operating systems are for intel machines and the G5 was the last of the Power PC machines.

You did of course make a backup of your previous system before upgrading and so perhaps the best thing would be to use the backup to go back to where you were prior to the upgrade and you should then find your contacts again. I suspect you will need to restore your iPad calendar manually.

Thank you for your response. My iMac is an intel core machine (3.2 GHz Intel Core i3) and I have managed to back up my contacts from an earlier back up but not my calendar though.
Can I not use iCloud to synchronise my contacts and calendars on my Mac and iPhone and iPad?

You should be able to synchronise your contacts on all your mac devices by going to system preferences and opening the iCloud preferences. There you can choose what to synchronise with iCloud. Remember that it will only synchronise Apple mail not other mail accounts. The other thing to be sure about is that when you sign up to iCloud on your iPad and or laptop you use the same login details.

You could also sync your iPad and phone through iTunes if iCloud does not oblige.

Thank you for your information and sorry not to get back sooner but I have been away. I have tried backing up to iCloud but that was when all the information on my iPad calendar was wiped and the contacts wiped from my computer. Also I now have 5 entries for the same birthday on each relevant date on my iMac, it's all a bit of a mess. Is there any way to get round this problem that I can try? Also, if I back up via iTunes will I end up with my iCal and my contacts from my iPad being corrupted by the iMac?

It's tricky to say at a distance but if you look on your iMac I suspect you'll have some contacts & calendars listed under the iCloud section and some under the On My Mac section. You possibly have some duplicated in both. The ones On My Mac are just that - only on your Mac unless you manually sync via iTunes. If you delete one/some, they will only disappear off your Mac, again, unless you manually sync via iTunes in which case they will be deleted from the mobile device. (Be aware that the mobile device can distinguish between two identical calendars etc., one On My Mac and one iCloud even though to you they are identical.) However, if you delete something from the iCloud section of your iMac or from any mobile device that's had it synced via iCloud, it will be deleted from all your devices.

Thank you. I have turned off 'back up to iCloud' on my mobile devices so is it ok to delete the duplicated accounts on my Mac and try to sort it out? If so, how do I delete an account, I can't see how to do that.

We need to be careful we're talking about the same thing here - it's easy to misunderstand. You would normally have one account with iCloud but perhaps multiple calendars. Don't delete your account!

Back up to iCloud probably means just that - a backup. Turning it off probably does not affect the synchronisation.

Will you by any chance be coming to the next meeting in Fareham (or any other?) It may be easier face to face.

I had a duplicate account which I have deleted but still have multiple calendars. Also, I had a mobile me gallery in iPhoto which is giving me problems, I can't delete that. I can come to Portchester on 29th and would be grateful for any help then. Thank you again for your advice.
