Safari will not quit when I press Command-Q and "Quit Safari" is greyed out in the menu bar.
Running OS 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7. on my iMac. Help will be appreciated. Roy
Or, and use this cautiously if you aren't sure what you are doing: try opening Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor). Look for the Safari icon as a process (with a process ID) in the left hand column. Highlight it, and click on the red "Quit Process" icon at the top left of the window. This is the same, more or less, as force quit, but is an opportunity to see any other process that may be hogging the CPU or being otherwise anti-social.
Sometimes fragments of code left in RAM after an application crash can cause the application to not function properly after it has been restarted, and it may crash again. Google's Streetcar (named Desire) is my personal favourite example. In this case -- in Lion -- you can clear the RAM by opening Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal). Wait for the prompt e.g. roy$ then type the single word (no caps) purge and press enter. Once the prompt reappears, quit Terminal. You get the same result by restarting the Mac, but this is a lot faster.
For a short discussion about this look at the recent Dorchester Meeting Diary on this site.
Thanks Euan. I had a look at Activity Monitor first and tried quit without success. Not a wasted visit though because I hadn't been there before! I then found that a Force Quit did work. Something that I should have thought about but haven't needed it for years. Thanks again. Roy
