suitable webcams for an iMac

Avatar David Fleetwood
I recall that this topic was aired on the Discussions page a year or so ago, when it transpired there were more webcams that work on an Mac than previously thought. However I cannot remember the details.
What do I need to look for to ensure a webcam would work on my G5 iMac and does anyone know if a Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 fits the bill?

OSX Tiger and Leopard have built in support for UVC (Universal Video Class) webcams - no drivers needed. All you need to do is find a UVC webcam!! (Usually requires USB2)

I was considering the Logitech Quickcam Ultra Vision HD Webcam as in the Apple link below. Looks a nice piece of kit! Available from ebuyer for £40.00 which is quite a bargain at the moment!

Thanks everyone for your rapid and helpful replies to my post. I have found that there is rarely mention of whether it is a UVC webcam in the product specs, which is frustrating. Also while the Logitech Ultra Vision sounds technically excellent, some of the comments refer to it's rather large size and this put me off as I was hoping for something less obtrusive. At the moment I am 'test driving' the Creative Live Cam Optia from Argos which Doug mentioned. It is fairly basic - no autofocus nor a mic. but it may do the job and is a bargain at £20. It was 'plug and play'. One 'con' is that the casing on my iMac is slightly too thick to enable it to clip on.
