I have Lightroom v.3 & 4 on my iMac and would like to have the same on my MacBook 1,1. However the MacBook doesn't meet the LR requirements in that the OS is 10.5.8. Is it possible at this stage to get the OS to 10.6.8 which is what the iMac is on?
Next question - LR requirements specify a Multicore Intel processor. Is the MacBook 1,1 Intel Core Duo unsuitable?
10.6 requires any Intel processor and at least 1GB of memory so it looks like you'd be OK. I think 'Core Duo' means two cores so would be a multi-core processor. All good news!
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7
2GB of RAM
Core Duos (being different to Core 2 Duos) have only 32 bit support.
Since MacBook1,1 are Core Duo, I suspect LR4 would not be compatible.
Lightroom 3.2 Tech Specs:
• Processor: Intel®-based
• OS: Mac OS X v.10.5-10.6
• RAM: 2GB of RAM
So you could install this directly on you MacBook. In either case if you have a 'shop bought' Snow Leopard disk, there little reason not to upgrade your MacBook to 10.6. (Providing you've got 2 GB, it'll run quite nicely on this).
Unlikely, 'install DVDs' for specific Macs generally check what Mac it is running on, they often reject the install process if the machine is different.
Which is why I mentioned the need for a 'shop bought' Snow Leopard disk.
Follow-up to the above is that, thanks to a friend's 'shop bought' Snow Leopard disk, I was able to try upgrading from 10.5.8 on the MacBook but after about 45 minutes with the 'installing' bar moving along nicely the process quit and the disc ejected. Do I have to accept that there is no way now to upgrade the MacBook since I have let the OS become so much out-of-date?
I have a lovely black MacBook 1,1 (2GHz, 2GB RAM) and a white MacBook 1,1 (1.83 Ghz, 2 GB RAM), they both run fine on 10.6.8 installed from a shop bought Snow Leopard Disk.
Perhaps your install disk is scratched or your DVD drive is behaving badly.
Not wanting to give up (yet) and prompted by a friendly member, I cleaned the 'shop bought' disk carefully and also ran a DVD laser cleaner in the MacBook drive. Then tried the Snow Leopard disk again but it failed to load again. I can't see any scratch or marks at all on the disk under a magnifying glass. Another thought is on the capacity of the MacBook hard drive. This is only 55GB with 18GB available. Could this cause the OS disk to be rejected?
18 GB might be a problem, but the installer should have notified you there is insufficient space on your HD before allowing you to proceeded with the installation.
