Contacts in iCloud

Avatar Lionel Ogden
iCloud seems to keep my contacts in sync apart from three Smart Groups I have created. It synchronises the ordinary groups. Is there some setting I need to choose or just accept that my smart groups will not be synchronised?

There doesn't seem to be. This is irritated me for a while now particularly when I want to email all the folk in one of my Smart Groups from my iPad - just can't do it!

I wonder if you could export a smart group as v cards and the copy those to your iPad, as a supplement to iCloud sync?

Mobile devices don't have the facility of Smart Groups so I expect that's why they don't sync. However, Lionel, are you saying they don't since from iMac to MacBook?

I cannot tell whether iCloud syncs to my Macbook because before I signed up to iCloud I had copied an archive of my address book on the iMac to my Macbook which included smart groups and everything else as far as I can tell. However on the iCloud site Smart groups are not shown in Contacts so I suppose they do not sync them between desktop and laptop.

I think this will be because Smart Groups are a setting in the Address Book software running on each individual machine. That setting acts on the data and iCloud only syncs the data not the program settings.
