Problem websites for Safari

Avatar Lionel Ogden
It seems a long time since we were complaining about certain websites that were not compatible with Safari and that we had to use Camino, Opera or Firefox to access them. A new one has come to my notice and will be of interest to those interested in genealogy. My wife and I have been using Ancestery.com to trace our ancestors and for several weeks all went well Safari. Recently however we have noticed that certain records we had found had disappeared from our tree and recently when she lost a whole profile, my wife felt it was time to contact Ancestry to find out what was happening. Eventually having been passed to a "technical expert" she was told that it was a problem between the website and Safari and that we should use Firefox for accessing Ancestry.

I have been accessing Ancestry OK. but now get problems re the recently released 1940 Census. I lag evermore behind as still with OS 10.4.11 PPC ; as a consequence Flash Player cannot be updated and Ancestry rely on Flash. Disabling plug-ins on the web-browser stops Flash and allows one to view census images by using Basic Viewer on the Ancestry Census images rather than the enhanced viewer. However despite Ancestry after a dozen message exchanges admitting it has problems with some Macs and that I should use Firefox, I regret to report that there are residual problems even with Firefox, & Opera as well as Safari. It is a problem of older Flash not being updateable, but Ancestry needing Flash for full utilisation of its site.

If you are running 10.4.11 with a PPC. Have you tried TenFourFox. This is supporting many of the newer HTML 5 standards than the old versions Safari and FireFox which supported Mac OS 10.4?

Mind you, if the Ancestery.com does not provide any alternatives to Flash for rendering, then this will not help.
