Gmail - interesting point

Avatar John Surtees
Both Joy and myself have Gmail accounts (not our main email address, but a good reserve). A few months ago Joy received an email that was probably spam, but the interesting thing was that in the e-mail address there was a full point (.) inserted before the last letter before the @ character, so it ended …[undisclosed email], It should be …[undisclosed email]. I did a trial with my Gmail account inserting a full point in the same place in my address and it too arrived as if it were the correct address. I tried putting the full point elsewhere in the address and got the Mail Delivery warning of a problem.

Just wondered if anybody knew of an explanation for it, or had similar experience.

Weird!
I have just been playing with one of my gmail addresses.

Sending from Mail:

A dot in any place in the name part is delivered.

A dot between each letter of the name part is delivered [that's 8 dots between 9 letters].

Two dots between two letters produces the warning from Mail "*******..[undisclosed email] does not appear to be a valid email address. Verify the address and try again". I clicked send anyway & it was delivered.

I tried 3 dots together, got the warning but clicked Send Anyway and it was delivered.

I substituted a dot for a letter and it was rejected.

Got bored.

Weird!
