Slow Mail

Avatar Roy Rainford
Recently the time between clicking 'Send' in Mail and the 'whoosh' sound, indicating 'Sent', has become several seconds. This occurs for simple one line messages without attachments and is the same on my iMac 27", iMac G5 and MacBook. A speed test shows 12 Mbps download and 0.8 Mbps upload.
When using web mail the speed is normal. ie. not slow or delayed in sending.
I wonder if this could be a router problem? It's a wireless Netgear DG834G v3.
However during an upload of 10 images yesterday there was no noticeable slowness.
Any suggested solutions will be welcome.

My guess would be a temporary slowness in the response of your ISP's mail server.

To get a rough idea if this is the case, make sure that Mail Activity is showing below your mail box list (click the little button that's down there if it isn't) not the separate window, and watch the blue line. If it just progresses slowly across then Mail is sending slowly for some reason. If on the other hand it takes a while to start moving but then zooms across, Mail is taking a while to communicate with the mail server as per my guess.

Thanks Mick. Earlier today I emailed the ISP (TalkTalk) and they asked for three speed checks to be sent to them. I did the last one a few minutes ago but then saw your reply so thought I would send myself an email to watch the blue line as suggested. I was amazed that the speed has returned and it is faster than I have ever known it! So fast that it 'whooshed' before I could watch the progress line!
I should mention that another WAMUG member, who is also a TalkTalk user said they were having the same problem. So your reply was correct. Thanks again.
