Wi-fi

Avatar Michael Corgan
It has become necessary to use a wi-fi router to get onto the Internet as we are temporarily moved out of our office – the only room in the house with a BYT phone socket. It is working fairly well aopaprt from a couple of hiccoughs, one very minor, the other more annoying. The first was when my wife tried to print from the iBook from downstairs. Nothing happened, until later, when I brought the iBook back to the temporary offioce in our back bedroom, when the printer sprang into life.

The other is a pest. There are several networks nearby, all with locks on. There are also two –BTFON and BTOpenzone. When I put wake my iMac from sleep it has jumped from my own router to the BTFON, and will not then connect to the internet, neither for browsing nor for email. SOmetimes it is a simple matter of clicking on my router in the Airport menu, but sometimes I need to re-start the router and enter the password before I can re-connect. Fortunately this situation won't last for ever as I will be reverting to a wired connection as soon as the office is back to normal. But it would be good to know why this is happening and what can be done to stop it.

This could be difficult to resolve at a distance but I suspect the two issues have a common cause but there are a few things you could try. I'm not sure if this will apply to the OS you're running on the iBook (is it old?) but hopefully it will.

Firstly, check in Network Preferences that you have elected to join known networks automatically and that it will request your permission to join new networks. Then, in the list of known networks, delete any of the BT ones it's joined (so it won't join again without asking) and drag your network to the top of the list so it looks for that one first.

My suspicion is that you could not print because it had joined another network downstairs but lost connection with it as you went upstairs, joined your network and kicked the printer into life. Just a guess mind!
