iWork permissions

Avatar Michael Corgan
A problem has shown itself when trying to save a Pages template document as a new file with another name. I am being told that I do not have access rights and getting info on the file and checking the permissions it appeared that these were Read Only. I have changed nothing, and was previously able to use and save templates as new documents without a problem. Changing the permissions to Read & Write has not cured this. The computer is a G4 iBook running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Pages '09. Transferring the file to my iMac running the same OS and version of Pages and changing the file name there and then doing the same with several subsequent files, I put them into a folder - and was not allowed to move the folder back into the iBook. Any ideas welcome!

Put the files in the Drop Box folder (inside Public folder) in the iBook and the iBook can pick them up from there and put them where they should be.

Thanks for the tip re Drop Box. However that was only an attempt to move saved files back onto the iBook. What do you think may have caused the permissions to change, apparently irrevocably, and how to circumvent that refusal is the main question!

Hi Mike, in the absence of any other suggestions as to the cause of this, is it possible that you had cloned from one Mac to another via an external hard drive? If so, this can cause the second Mac's 'new' OS to decide that the files are in some sense backups and can't be changed as you have no rights.

This happened to me, and if I remember rightly, I fixed it by giving 'System' rights to read and write. Proceed with caution, however, as changing permissions in the wrong way (especially globally, i.e. 'including all items within' which cannot be undone) is very iffy indeed, although I have used that to unlock some CDs of photos I was sent.

Phone me if this rings a bell, and if we find an answer you can post it here.
