Contacts from PC to iPad

Avatar John Marriott
Having converted my family to the wonders of Apple I am now faced with numerous questions. Some I can answer but this one I can't.
My daughter wishes to transfer all her contacts from her PC to the iPad 2 to save typing them all in manually.
They have been told that the only way is to 'stream' them via iCloud, but since they do not have iCloud I wondered if there was an alternative way, possibly via an app. Could anyone help me please?

Surely you can just synch the contacts via iTunes:

Plug iPad into Mac which should launch iTunes (Or, with iOS5 and Snow Leopard, you can just launch iTunes and it will find the iPad over WiFi)

Then, in iTunes
i) Select iPad in sidebar
ii) Click on 'Info' tab
iii) Tick 'Sync Address Book Contacts'
iv) Click 'Sync' in bottom right.

Thanks for that Trevor, the only flaw is that my daughter does not have a Mac to plug her iPad into. We have tried via iTunes which she has on her Samsung PC but without any success. It looks like an investment in Cloud.

Sorry John, missed the PC bit - you will just have to work harder on your Apple conversion mission!

Can she not export her contacts from the PC by sending a V-card for all of them? The iPad would then be able to use the V-card to populate the Contacts database.

This worked for one contact just recently for me when my son who is yet fully to enjoy the delights of Apple sent me details of his new address .

Another possibility would be to use Dropbox, which is available for PC Mac and iPad and free up to 2gb.

John,
Have your daughter create an account on one of your macs, and synch the ipad with that account. then on the PC, export all the contacts as a Vcard or some format that the mac understands, and move, copy, or otherwise get the PC addresses file to her account. import them into contacts, and sync away. this may sound long winded, but if you have a lot of contact data, it beats re-typing.
