iPad Camera and A/V adapters

Avatar Trevor Hewson
As the recipient of an iPad at Christmas, I am currently navigating my way through the accessory maze.

I would be interested to hear of experiences (both positive and negative) relating to the various camera connection kits and A/V adapters available. I have just returned the Shinntto 5 way adapter which managed to connect to a camera once then refused to do so again, and am wondering whether to give the cheapo route another try or shell out for the genuine Apple item.

On the plus side, I can recommend the TeckNet® iPad 2 Premium Folio Case / Cover and Flip Stand.

I use the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit with a16 GB memory card from a Panasonic camera - no problems. The Dorchester group uses the Apple Digital AV Adapter with the Group's projector and that works perfectly.

Thanks for that Mark. As with most new iPad owners (and possibly all iPad users?), I still haven't worked out quite what role the device is going to play so I have deferred the video out issue for the moment.

Skinflint that I am though, I still haven't come to terms with shelling out £25 for Apple's camera connection kit so have taken another punt at a cheapo (sub £5) one. I'll let you know whether it works!

The second cheapie adapter seems to work fine, as long as you are prepared to ignore the occasional 'this accessory is not supported by iPad' message. I've so far tried two SD cards in it (from Canon and Panasonic ultrazoom cameras) and also connected Mary's Canon DSLR (which uses a Compact Flash card) via the USB port. All worked okay.

If anyone else fancies trying the cheapskate route, this is the adapter I bought:
