awake from ye slumber !

It's been so quiet lately I thought might do a post test ! and if nothing else to shake you all away from your mince pies and back into the world of Mack Crack.

Downloaded the latest version of OnyX for lion ( I'm running 10.7.2 ) and on starting it up it checked the disk and told me to repair it by restarting and holding down the cmd-r keys. This worked a treat.

Ive heard of holding down the 'shift' key before here in posts, and as there is only a 'ctrl' an 'alt and an 'cmd' on my keyboard I never understood which key 'Shift' actually was as it was never explained and not written on any key on the board ( yes I know it's easy if you know ! )

Anyway no such problems to worry about this time or riddles to decipher as I duly pressed 'cmd-r' and bingo we where into the repair business ! after some careful checking and remembering what OnyX had told me to do I had the disk repaired ( clarified and highlighted in green ).

My questions are based around what happens next ......

1. Is this what is referred to as "Safe Mode" ?
2. How long would the repair last ........or possibly how often should I do a repair ? on every restart ?

Thanks in advance .....
Tom

The shift key is the one used in conjunction with a letter to give you the upper case version or with a number to give you the symbol above the number on that key e.g. Shift+3 will print £. I expect it's called shift from the old typewriter days when pressing it did indeed shift the carriage upwards in order to allow the upper case version of the letter to hit the paper.

Safe mode, achieved by holding down Shift at startup stops all software except vital Apple stuff from running in order to track down glitches that may be caused by third party software.

Repairs are rarely necessary and certainly not every start!
