Epson Scan and Lion

Avatar John Marriott
Installed Lion and since then when I try to open the Epson scanner i get a dialogue box telling me that " you cannot open the application EPSON Scan because PowerPC applications are no longer supported!
I have always updated the Epson software and this printer has never been connected to a PowerPC system.
If I wish to scan now I must go to system preferences, select print and scan icon and scan from there, which is very limited. The printer function works as normal. The model is a CX 6600.
Anyone any ideas, Epson are useless.

Hi John, I'm afraid it's Old Father Time and his notorious electronic scythe. Your scanner software was written for Power PC, and you were using it under Rosetta which, before Lion, allowed PPC software to run on Intel Macs. This is why you had not hitherto noticed a problem. The scanner element is now "unsupported".

You can still run your scanner on your Leopard/Snow Leopard clone -- if you made one. Or you can install either on another partition, internal or external -- if you have one or can make one.

You should use the "Epson Scan Uninstaller" to get rid of any old driver software (which MAY ALSO uninstall your printer software, so take care and use only if you have downloaded a more recent driver set than your existing one.)

I have an Epson scanner from the days when integrated printer-scanners hardly existed, and had the same problem.

You can try Vuescan (trial version available), but it isn't free.

Here's something else to try: download the latest driver software from Epson (Google your scanner + drivers). Make sure Epson's download site recognises your Mac OS (Lion) and your Mac (Intel).

Install, then use Preview to do your scans. Here's the second bit: use Preview tools to adjust the scan (or iPhoto, Photoshop) especially use the histogram by moving the light and dark limit adjusters as necessary and the balance (central) adjuster to suit. Preview is not automated unlike Epson's scan software. I doubt that Epson will ever produce updates for these old scanners to Lion.

As ever Euan, thanks for that. The Epson people failed to mention the fact that the scanner is unsupported.
Have now resorted to scanning to preview and that of me is fine for the time being.
