iDisk Synch Problem

Avatar Trevor Hewson
This is my first posting to this forum since joining WAGS a couple of months ago. Thanks to all who made my wife and I so welcome at our first meeting.

Since upgrading my G4 iMac from Panther to Leopard (a very positive experience on the whole, by the way), I am having major problems synchronising my iDisk.

The good news is that the sync process seems to go much faster than before and no longer gives up at the first hiccup. However, FileSynch reports numerous conflicts every time, claiming that the .mac version of a particular file has a later modification date than the local one - in spite of the fact that all files are uploaded via the local copy of the iDisk.

I host my website on my iDisk and, although it takes up only 153MB, it consists of over 9000 files, so I usually get reports of hundreds or even thousands of conflicts, even when I am only trying to synchronise a couple of updated web pages.

Any thoughts?

I can't provide much help as I don't use .mac, however after reading a few forums it has led me to suggest trying to reset the data sync. This should remove any date errors. You do this by going to: System Preferences/.Mac/Sync/Advanced/Reset Sync Data.

If you can post any error logs/codes someone may be able to suggest some other ideas.

Hope that helps...!

Thanks Terry. My problem though relates to sychronising the local and remote iDisk copies. This is controlled from the iDisk pane of the .Mac preferences. The Sync pane seems to relate to using .Mac to synchronise user data (address book etc.) between different computers, which I have never done. I have nothing ticked in this pane and the Advanced panel you refer to has no computers listed in it. I am a bit reluctant to disturb this 'virgin' situation but I suspect the software used is the same as for the iDisk synch so I suppose it is not out of the question that the 'Reset Sync Data' might have an effect on my problem? While browsing the Preferences I just had a look at the new 'Back to My Mac' pane for the first time and found that this service is turned on. I don't use it, so have now turned it off. Don't know whether this will make any difference.

The nearest thing in the iDisk pane to 'Reset Sync Data' would be to opt out of having a local copy of the iDisk and then re-instate it. Of course, I would then have over 9000 files to synchronise again, so this is a bit of a last resort!

I will try to record the error messages in more detail next time.
