Vertical shadows on MacBook

Avatar John Marriott
My macBook Pro has just started to show vertical shadows coming from the bottom of the screen. These are clearly visible when the screen is showing a white or light background as it is on this page. has anyone any ideas?

Sounds like your back light behind your LCD is failing.

If so, the only solution is to replace your MacBook screen.

Thanks Martin, sounds like an expensive repair.

_IF_ this is the problem... then Yes. Expensive.

Here's a typical MacBook screen replacement: (I'm NOT saying THIS is the one you want mind.. there are a number of different MacBooks).

http://www.thebookyard.com/product.php?manufacturers_id=14&products_id=3903 (£99)

Then there's the cost of replacing it. (Or doing it yourself via http://www.ifixit.com ).

A good quality second hand Core 2 Duo MacBook goes for £250-300 on ebay.

I had a problem with my 4-year-old MacBook Pro where part of the screen was black (so not quite the same as yours unless your's is in early stages). I took it to the Apple Store in West Quay for evaluation as I didn't want to spend a large sum repairing a machine of this age, I'd rather put it towards a new one. (If inexpensive I'd have repaired - but what Apple repair is inexpensive!) They plugged in their diagnostic machine and said the graphics card is failing - known fault, free of charge repair even though well out of Apple warranty! Worth checking.
