iPhoto & Lion A cry for help from Cork Unioversity MUG - has anyone experienced this problem?

Avatar Michael Corgan
Am finding that Lion can't cope with iPhoto ( or vice versa): very sluggish
after any adjustment & locks up all the time. An additional trial is that
the Force Quit option is useless in this situation: it can't be found
because the lock-up has- well, - locked everything up. So, for the first
time in years I'm having to restart to deal with one malfunctioning app.
THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT OPERATING SYSTEM PROGRESS!

Greetings to Eire. As they are (reputed) to say over the water "if I was going there I wouldn't start from here".

I haven't heard of particular problems with iPhoto and Lion, although Lion converts iPhoto libraries to its preferred format before use -- make a backup! Something might have gone wrong with this conversion, possibly due to a pre-existing issue.

If Disc Utility permissions repair doesn't help, and disc repair shows no problems, try Safe Boot (hold down the shift key at startup). Don't forget to restart 'normally' afterwards.

Try opening iPhoto with the Option key held down to create a new library. Populate that with a scattering of photos to see if all is well. There just might be one rogue image: so add them say, ten at a time, until you can find the little offender. Keeping iPhoto libraries reasonably sized and focussed helps here. Option start offers the choice of all your libraries.

Try creating a new User for testing (e.g. "Mr Clean") and try opening the offending file from there.

Other suggestions? See "The Big Cleanup" (22 Jul 2011) for starters. (I'll email you my bit so you can forward it).

Beyond that Onyx -- from > www.titanium.free.fr < is terrific and won't harm your System. Always use the correct version for your OSX version - 3.4.1 for Lion. Onyx will clear his/her caches (clear all of them except Log files and Misc. if nothing else works).

Clearing caches results in slow to very slow operation afterwards at first, while the caches are rebuilt in their new and hopefully clean state.

Your friend may need to chuck the offending library and revert to a backup, or rebuild it from scratch.

Lion is gorgeous and there aren't many glitches even at this early stage. 10.7.2 should clear most of those.

The new and delightful Find option now finds 'housework' -- there is no longer any excuse -- thanks Chris!
