Downloading Lion Installer a 2nd time.

Avatar Andrew Banks
At the recent Fareham meeting, I mentioned that I had managed to work out how to get a 2nd copy of Lion downloaded from the app store on the same machine, that has now got Lion installed. Normally this is prevented, however if you ever want to make a clean install of Lion, say you upgrade your Mac Hard Disk, having a bootable DVD is a sensible idea. Also if like me, you installed Lion straight away, the installer gets destructed after install. Apple don't tell you this of course.

A number of people at the Fareham meeting asked me to make available some instructions on how to do this, so For Euan and others I now have obliged. Before I found the WAMUG, I created a new MUG for Liss my home village. Since I registered a domain name, I have kept this on and manage it as a web site only. Then joined WAMUG, I use the site to post my technical knowledge base documents and instructions.

The link to Downloading Lion is Downloading Lion

For members who have yet to install Lion, another option is to copy the downloaded Lion installer to an external drive or USB stick and retain this for installing on another machine or if you should wish to do a re-install at some later date. When you use it on another machine, it has to be a machine which is registered with the same iTunes account and if you copy the Lion installer to the desktop, not the applications folder, it will not delete itself after installation.

I have a problem installing Lion onto my MacBook. I downloaded it onto my iMac and burnt a DVD copy as per Euan's instructions! However the MacBook, the disc drive of which can read DVD's but not burn them, will not open it up - after some whirring & clicking it usually just spits it out! The DVD itself seems ok as it will open up on the iMac.
The only way around this I can think of is to get a USB stick and copy the DVD to that and then try that in the MacBook - unless there are any other ideas?!

Did you save the entire installer (as per Euan's instructions)? If so, copy it to the Applications folder of the MacBook (assuming that too is running Snow Leopard) and do a conventional upgrade.

On Trevor's point firstly - there are cost implications on our broadband of another 3.6 GB download so would prefer to avoid this if poss! Onto Mick's reply, yes the entire installer was saved to the DVD. If I am reading it correctly I would need to connect the iMac & MacBook e.g. on my wireless network and copy the DVD to my app's folder on the MacBook, which is running Snow Leopard. Then just run it? -sounds too easy!!

Sorry - I thought you may have burned just the dmg file from within the application to make a bootable DVD, hence my question. If you have burned the whole installer to DVD, I'm fairly sure that what you say now is correct - it is that easy - and of course you are only copying over the network because the MacBook won't read the DVD.

Re Cost implications of downloading a second copy of Lion, on most broadband packages, certainly on Plusnet, Downloads made between midnight and 8am do not count against your download limit and so to all intents and purposes are free. However you may not be a Night Bird like me and this may take a degree of organisation.

On the downloading issue, we are not with Plusnet although we are with a company owned by them (waitrose.com) - and in turn I believe Plusnet are owned by BT! But waitrose don't have any 'free period'. There are 3 of us using our internet connection and we fully utilise our 20GB monthly allowance and often get caught for extra GB's at £2 a go hence my trying to avoid a large download!

You download 20GB? OMG - and I thought I used my machine a lot! ;-)
