Lion is now available: 3.49Gb.

Avatar Euan Williams
My Lion download is now finished (about an hour or so) and completely smooth. The download appears in your Applications folder as
> Install Mac OS X Lion <
I have backed this up to a separate drive just in case -- and will do the installation later.

Mark Ford asked for the links recently posted about preparing your Mac and burning to DVD and Flash drives, etc. to be collected in one place. Here they are (without short links). Please remember that there are a myriad of other bits of advice out there, and that all will only become clear once downloading and installations have actual been done.

Preparing your Mac:

Update Snow Leopard Migration Assistant
-- this might mean that migration assistant is not available from Leopard or earlier OSX versions, but since the update mentions migrating “compatible apps” this may just be a special version for Lion migrations. See also Ars Technica pages below.)

Burning Installer to DVD for a bootable DVD:

Making your User Library visible, or not:

hope this helps.

Well done, Euan! Out of interest, what speed is your connection - must be 12Mb/s or more. I'm impressed that Apple seems to be coping with the load.

Anyone looking for a comprehensive review of Lion will find one of the best here:

Arstechnica Review - John Siracusa

Be patient downloading as it is very long, but you can print it to .pdf, saving the cost of getting it as an eBook from Amazon.

Thank you Euan, I downloaded and installed it on my MacBook this morning, total time one hour and forty seven minutes.

24 hours later: I have tasted Geek Heaven (rising tones of Beethoven's 9th Symphony (final Ode to Joy movement). This Lion brings an apparently inexhaustible series of unexpected little delights as well as the big ones we know about. No problems so far at all.

Anyone wondering "is it really worth it?" should probably start thinking about a "Yes".

Items stored in the User Library folder in Mac OS X Lion are now hidden.

From CNET (replaces an earlier post referencing the Terminal procedure):

To view the User Library folder in Mac OS X Lion:
. From the Finder menu bar navigate to Go > Go to Folder.
. Type: ~/Library
. Click Go, and you will be presented with a Finder window with the Library folder as the active location.

Re: Arstechnica review

1. Install the Safari Extension AutoPagerize > https://extensions.apple.com < then check the category 'Productivity', then scroll to AutoPagerize. Press Install.
This should allow all the successive pages of a web "page" to open as one long page.

2. Now click on the URL posted on the WaMug discussions page, and let it fully develop until the last page has loaded, this may take a while, depending on your connection). There are (if I remember right) about 17-19 "web" pages which "print" in the .pdf as 47 .pdf pages.

3. Print to .pdf. My file is 8.8mb.
Of course you can download the pre-formed .pdf from Arstechnica if you prefer.

Re: Java Runtime Environment
If this is required by your application and it doesn't automatically respond:
here's how to initiate the Java runtime installation or confirm it is currently installed.
1. Go to Applications > Utilities > Java Preferences
2. Open the Java Preferences
3. If Java is not installed you will receive the following message,
“To open “Java Preferences", you need a Java runtime. Would you like to install one now?” with "Not Now" and "Install" buttons.
4. Click the "Install” button, accept the license agreement, the Java runtime will be downloaded and installed.

Apple has handed Java installation back to Oracle (who took it over from Sun Microsystems) and it is no longer installed as part of OSX Lion.

Re Williams comment on how to see the Library folder - you can also see it directly and always if you select View - System Files in Finder.

Avatar Douglas Cheney
You can also view the library by holding down the option key when clicking on the go menu

You can also get the User Library back again by typing 'chflags nohidden ~/Library/' into Terminal and hitting enter...
