Re: The Roar of Lion

Killing the Sosume sound (for that is what it is called I believe)

I did a search on the Apple discussion form a few months ago on this topic which gave several potential answers
Apple discussion search

I also came across some code at
Code to disable the start up sound

however as the start up sound is a diagnostic aid it may not be such a good idea.

Unless you are going to do lots of reboots of the machine why not put the machine to sleep and then when it re awakes it will do it silently.

If you want to stop the 'startup chime'. Try turning off/down the output (sound) volume of your Mac before restarting it.

System Preferences -> Sound -> Output Volume.

This works on my MacBook Pros and PowerMac G5.

Simples!

BTW: 'Sosumi' is not the 'Start up' chime. Check out the Sound Effects in the Sound Preferences. 'Sosumi' comes across as a short piano 'tink'.
As a side note... there's a funny history why we have a sound effect called 'Sosumi' on the Mac... Google it to find out.

I downloaded Lion overnight a couple of days ago to avoid using up a large chunk of my monthly download limit. I am not sure how long it took, but sufficient to say it was sitting cosily in my Applications folder by the time I woke the next day. As advised by Euan, I copied the whole installer to an external drive and then to a USB stick. From there I copied the installer to my Macbook and installed Lion on to it. The install took about forty minutes and appears to work fine. To my relief my network connected HP printer works . I intend to update my iMac when I have closed my WAMUG accounts for the year as they are currently running in an aged version of MS Excel which will be scorned by Lion.

One consequence of running Lion on the Macbook is that I keep very few Applications on the Dock now, because Launchpad is so quick that all my apps are there instantly. Unfortunately because the Macbook is about three years old and has the old style trackpad, many of the new gestures do not work, just those that worked before such as two finger scrolling. I guess it would be too much to hope that Apple would issue a trackpad firmware upgrade to enable a wider range of gestures

Glad your Lion is settling in well and purring. I wish Launchpad had kept to the Dock convention of a white spot under active apps. I prefer not to have to check the dock to see what’s running.

It seems unlikely that the built in trackpad can be uprated with or without a firmware update. I bought a Magic Trackpad for my only slightly younger MacBook. We have worked out a good partnership, and I wouldn’t go back. Those Exposé and full screen desktop changes, leafing through Safari pages -- all are seductive.

Four hints to offer:
1. MTp software has apparently lost the “ignore accidental inputs” option in system prefs. This means that stray fingers, even sleeves, need to be kept clear of the trackpad on your laptop as well as the MTp surface. Maybe Apple will correct this in time.

2. heavy spreadsheet use is better with a mouse, but it’s easy to use both interchangeably.

3. using the MTp with different Macs means ‘ownership’ issues will need to be dealt with; If any MTp, keyboard or mouse could communicate with any Mac without pairing there would be chaos.

4. If you use your MTp with another Mac and resynching with your own is difficult, it’s probably best to restart the Mac.

You will take time to build up appropriate muscle memory but it really is no particular effort; just keep practicing.

Meantime, thanks for looking after our accounts , Lionel. ;-)

We're at much the same stage as Lionel - Lion is running okay on our plastic MacBook (with the same gesture limitations), but the iMac is yet to be upgraded. In our case though I plan to download Lion again so I'm waiting for the new quota period which starts on Tuesday.

During the preparation phase I did take Euan's advice and cloned the MacBook's Snow Leopard installation to an external drive, then partitioned the internal drive and cloned it back, so that I now have both Lion and Snow Leopard bootable from the MacBook's internal drive. This has enabled us yet again to put off facing up to converting our library of AppleWorks documents.

The bonus though is that the iMac also boots satisfactorily from the MacBook's cloned Snow Leopard installation (unless Bluetooth is turned off, in which case it's quite tricky to get past the login screen with a wireless keyboard and magic mouse!) So this gives us an emergency Rosetta option for the iMac too - AppleWorks lives!

Just an update to my earlier post. When I tried to open the MS EXcel copy of the accounts that I had kept on my Macbook (via Dropbox) it opened instantly in Numbers instead. So I had no need to worry that I might lose my accounts after all.

Re: The Roar of Lion

Avatar Trevor Hewson
I find that Numbers does a pretty good job of opening Excel spreadsheets. You usually do get some warnings though, which are worth reviewing. Usually it's just fonts but occasionally there is something more significant - hopefully nothing to invalidate the WAMUG accounts!

Our iMac has now been Lionised (a whole new meaning to that word). Once we had removed the 'natural' scrolling option, it seems to work very smoothly.

One thing though - contrary to what was said at the Bournemouth Solutions briefing, Launchpad does not seem to see applications that are inside their own folders within the Applications folder. Interesingly the Help search box drew a blank on 'Launchpad'. Any ideas?

Re: The Roar of Lion

Since updating my iMac to Lion it has lost the start up chime. When it starts up there is just a gentle sigh as the hard disc spins up, but otherwise silence. The Macbook I updated about the same time "bongs" as it always has done. I am not sure that dislike the silent start, but it may indicate that something is amiss.

Any suggestions?

Re: The Roar of Lion

Avatar Trevor Hewson
That's odd - I'm sure we established in another thread that it wasn't possible to mute the startup chime. Our iMac 'bongs' at startup on Lion, just as it did before so you have definitely discovered something here Lionel!

There is a small program called start up sound which allows you to adjust the startup sound volume

I have tried this but it has made no difference

I have just used Carbon Copy Cloner to replicate my Hard Drive before installing Lion on my iMac. Initially CCC said my iomega may not be bootable so I formatted it with one partition and the GUID option. The clone then seemed to run perfectly, with no warning from CCC, and I can view the back up in Finder. When I try to boot using the iomega drive - holding down the Alt/Option key when switching the power on - the old Macintosh HD is the only one that shows up.

I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to solve this.

The Information for the iomega drive says it is
Partition Map Scheme GUID partition table
Disk Identifier disk1
Madia Type External RAID media
Media Type Generic
Connection Bus Firewire
Writable Yes
Ejectable Yes
Location External
S.M.A.R.T. Status Not Supported
Disk Number 1
Partition Number 0

This was a self healing event! Having switched everything off and gone out for some time I came back, switched on with Option depressed and there was my iomega drive ready for selection. I have no idea why it needed switching off and on again but it seemed to like having a rest.

Re: The Roar of Lion

i tried this but sadly without result. Resetting the PRAM seemed promising as I got the double "BONG" before starting up. But on a normal start up still no "BONG". A reinstall of Lion had no effect either. I think I shall learn to live with a silent iMac. When I am missing the "BONG", I shall use my Macbook
