Running out of addresses.....

Avatar Gordon Clyne
It has been proposed that the planet will run out of unique ip addresses ( MAC addresses) sometime this summer,

The move to IPV6 will of course blow this limitation away, but it was originally thought that IPv4 we have today would last until 2080 or so, even at the exponential growth in the 70s and 80s. Discuss.

It is my belief that as we add vehicles and consumer white goods to the local networks in homes etc, that we will soak up more network addresses faster than ever before.

What would you like to see in your home as a network controllable device and why?

Last night we talked briefly about iCloud, and it's real launch later in the year, probably with hot new Christmas iToys for us all to indulge in, what do you speculate those might be or more accurately, what would you like for Christmas if you could gaze into the high tech crystal ball.?

My vote is for a home dusting and tidying app. Wouldn't mind one for my desktop either but the new Safari Reading List feature may help there.

8th June was IPv6 day, when interested users and sites made a special effort to test their readiness for the new protocol. Currently some sites use both IPv4 and IPv6 addressing.

Here is an article from The Guardian with explanations, and here is the Internet Society’s explanatory page

The Internet Society can test your connection here, with more detailed explanations to stop the whole thing getting scary.

They may not like it up ’em but don’t panic!

My vote is for a total moratorium on any future development until I have caught up with everything already out there (which means forever). We oldies struggle enough as it is.

Alan, It's not "he who dies with the most toys wins" or even knowing the most, thats for teachers!! ( sorry if you are a teacher) But pick the stuff you are REALLY interested in only and concentrate on that. Don't stop development we'll become Luddites!
