Will I get Lion free if I buy a new Mac today?

Avatar Euan Williams
MacRumours have found buried in the bottom of the OS X Lion press release yesterday this note about Up-To-Date:

"The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lions official release date to make a request."

Coo! What an excellent excuse to buy another Mac today! ;-)

One question I have but cannot find an answer too. Mac OS X Lion Server will sell for £34.99... Very tempting... However I need a copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard server first. But what can I do if I haven't got Snow Leopard server? How can I upgrade?

It's a bit crazy if you have to buy a copy of Snow Leopard Server on ebay first before you upgrade... You can see these old copies going for silly prices in a few short months...

Martin, perhaps this is one of those rather rare moments when Apple rewards its long-term customers, but having said that, it is rather odd. The Snow Leopard to Lion installer connection may be to encourage new mac sales, but server software?

I rechecked the Lion server part of the Apple website, and could see no requirement (beyond the standard Snow Leopard installation) for any previous server software installation, and one enthusiastic report yesterday marvelled that Lion Server was "just an app, like any other" -- provided you had Lion OS previously installed via Snow Leopard. Do you know differently -- as fact? I was rather looking forward to learning a bit about servers before your post.

OSX Daily posted this article today about making a DVD from the 4Gb appstore download. The comments below make some valid points about bandwidth and fair use policies.
