Mail seems to be on and off the last few days. It tells me that my settings are incorrect, the menu indicates that I am offline and when I select to go online the dreaded exclamation marks appear against the inboxes etc.
On Safari I can both receive and send - it does not seem to be affected at all.
Later in the day Mail seems to rectify itself and I am back to normal. I am using version 4.5. and I have not changed any setting at all. The same thing is happening to my iPod touch, but this tells me that I am using the incorrect settings for my user name and password.
Can anyone suggest a cause of this?

It sounds like an issue at the server end i.e. your email provider - probably your ISP. Unfortunately the error messages are often unhelpful. For example, if the error message says "the server did not accept your user name or password" you tend to think they're incorrect but it may well be that the server is not working as it should so can't accept any user name or password.

I seem to be back in business at the moment. As you say the error messages are not helpful and you could end up changing settings only to find that it was not your problem at all.
