Mac App Store

Avatar Trevor Hewson
I see that iPhoto and iMovie are on sale at the Mac App store for £8.99 each which, since I don't use Garageband, would be cheaper than £46 for iLife 11.

Question 1: If I purchase these from the App store, will they be available to all users on my iMac or are they tied to my Apple ID?

Question 2: Previously, I have always bought the family packs so that we could upgrade the MacBook too. However, since I use the same Apple ID on both iMac and MacBook, would one App store purchase cover both machines?

Life was so much simpler when there was only the corner shop!

After a bit of Googling, it seems that the answer to question 2 is yes - one purchase will cover both machines. No explicit confirmation that the download works for other users of the same machine but hopefully if it didn't there would be an outcry by now?

However, during my search, I also stumbled across lots of complaints about iPhoto11, mainly related to speed and stability. Probably better to pose that question as a new topic, methinks.

Don't know about the stability, but the demo of iPhoto 11 last evening at Bournemouth showed no signs of sli=uggishness. I suppose it could depend on the size of the iPhoto library, and there is no knowing how many photo files there were in the demo version.

Thanks Michael - sorry we couldn't make the meeting. I'm visiting a friend over the weekend who has a new iMac and iLife 11 so I'll have a play and try to decide whether I really need the iPhoto upgrade. I might make iMovie my first Mac App store purchase instead - the changes to that do seem to be pretty significant. Mind you, I haven't checked to see if people are having issues iMovie 11 too!

I'm running iPhoto from the iLife 11 DVD and it works just fine as do the other upgrades. iMovie is terrific. Remember to backup your iPhoto folder before you upgrade partly in case there is a glitsch, but particularly because the new iPhoto uses a slightly different indexing-storage system (don't ask!) and earlier versions won't work with the "new" setup. Apple installer warns you about this.

Sometimes it helps to make a new iPhoto library for a particular purpose (Swimming with Sharks in Australia, Trip to the NorthPole, Changing the Drive on my Laptop) as these are smaller and easily accessible.

As Trevor suggests I have started a new topic on iPhoto '11

Just got a red badge on my App Store icon indicating an update to one I bought awaits. Looks like a good system and over time almost all update alerts will arrive that way.

One small stumbling block is that there seems to be no way for developers to charge a small amount to existing users for a major upgrade - you buy it again at the full App Store price. Having looked at the iPhone/iPod/iPad App Store recently, there are just sooooooo many apps, you need to know what you want before you go - a good app can get lost in the numbers! So the 'reaching a huge audience' argument gets a little lost - at least for me. I'm reserving judgement.
