Mail

Avatar John Marriott
Every time I wish to send mail I get a dialogue box telling me I must enter my mail password and do I wish to remember this password in my keychain.
This happens every time and it's getting annoying.
I have been in mail preferences and selected the 'send new messages from' - the selected mail box.
This makes no difference to this annoying dialogue box - it just keeps popping up!
I have not made any changes to the account
it happens on both my laptop and iMac. The version of mail 4.4
Can anyone help me on this? I know its not major but it is still bugging me.

John, I’m rusty on this, and others can offer better and more detailed advice, but there are usually two password issues relating to mail servers: one to get access to your ISP’s mail service, and one to download your mail.

Check your setup (Mail programme preferences “Account Information” tab and “Advanced” tab) to make sure both are entered for automatic operation from your keychain (security relies on your OSX log-in password as always).

Originally, we filled out the "forms" and hoped for the best, but for quite a number of years Apple has made setting up a step-by-step affair so that each stage is checked before the next stage can be reached -- very frustrating sometimes, but it works.

Try moving your mail preferences [com.apple.mail.plist] out of Users> John> Library> Preferences to a safe place (back up), and then go through the set-up again making sure you provide both password settings. If you come totally adrift you can put the old one back again.

Make screen dumps (Cmnd-shift-4 then space bar and mouse click) of your existing Mail settings before you start. Label them sequentially.

It’s sensible to make screen dumps of any setting dialogue box as you work through and to store them away in a safe place so that in years to come you can refer back to “what I did that works ok”.

Open Keychain Access and look in the Login keychain for the password for your mail account. Delete it. When you next send/receive Mail will ask for it but this time should remember it.

Hi Mick

Not sure about this procedure. Have opened Keychain Access and looked in the Login keychain for the password for the mail account but cannot see it. When I double click on the @mail.btinternet.com all it tells me is that it has a password not the actual password. Do I delete the entire line after highlighting it?

if you want to see the stored password, double click the "line" and then tick the show password box. It will ask you for your main administrator password to show you are authorised. But yes, you delete the whole line and Mail will create a new one after it asks you for your password one more time.
