Light Peak progress

Avatar Euan Williams
Way back in September 2009 Engadget offered a glimpse into Apple and Intel's future data link plans running on an OSX Mac:
Engadget on Light Peak tech.

Yesterday Brooke Crothers (on CNet) reported progress, suggesting that the technology may be available soon enough in 2011 to dampen the current (limp) enthusiasm for USB3:
Light Peak CNET update

Not perhaps hugely useful for the family inkjet, but for shifting hefty data in both directions simultaneously (and powering more demanding peripherals) it may gain favour over Firewire 800, eSata etc. -- for example, how long does it take to clone your drive or backup all those photos? It is said to be scaleable to iPhone, iPod, iTouch and iPad level.

Could we see early provision for this in MacOs 10.7 (Lion) this coming summer or autumn?

There are only a couple of hardware items in the wild running usb3 sockets, and they have it disabled in their bios by default until windows can find and install decent drivers for the hardware.... So.... You will have to wait until an apple hardware cycle comes round for the fast support. Remember USB 3 can out run a sata drive at full bore, so this technology is aimed fully at solid state drives that have the access times to match the xfer speed. Supertalent released an SSD earlier this year, but due to the lack of sockets it only sold in sample quantities. But you'll start to see usb3 and support for the protocol showing up in laptops soon, and in Q1 of 2011 around the consumer electronics show in vegas.
