Has anyone had problems trying to connect a G5 to a network with a Belkin Pre-n router using a WPA 2 Personal password? The message comes up 'this encryption method is not supported by this system'. I would be very grateful for any hints.
Have you tried using another form of encryption such as another WPA variant or even WEP. I have WPA 2 encryption on my netgear router and have accessed it using a number of computers including some PC laptops.
I am not familiar with a Belkin Router but two other makes I have used, each have a control panel where you can set up among other things the type of wireless security you wish to use, be it WEP, WPA or none at all, the latter is not recommended apart from for testing purposes. The instruction leaflet should give you details about how to access the control panel it usually requires you to enter a supplied IP address into your web browser's address bar
Judith, have you set the password in the router or is it a default one? If default, just try entering it as a WPA on your Mac. I'm guessing you can connect by ethernet (which is how you posted) so you must have accessed the router at some time to enter your ISP's details. You should be able to access the router to investigate. I'm going from memory but I think the default IP address 192.168.2.1. I believe there is no password needed - can't remember about a user name but if it asks, try admin.
Thank you both for your responses. I am trying to connect my old G5 which was on a netgear router and am wondering if I should delete that system as it is the preferred connection. Also, the machine is set up for computer to computer connection. Do you know how to remove that option.
Still on Tiger, OS 10.4 (with all updates) and yes the location is set to automatic. Just graduated to Snow Leopard on a new machine and that is giving me a nightmare time too. Airport on this one gives me a self assigned IP address for no reason at all. I have to delete my network set up and start again to connect to the internet. Brain going into overload!
Thank you Mick, I've looked at the web site and I'm sure it'll help. I won't be able to attack the Tiger G5 until I come back from holiday but I've plenty of pointers so am hopeful. Hope to see you at a meeting soon
