iPhone 4 and photos

Avatar Michael Corgan
I keep my photograph files not in iPhoto but in folders by camera – not that I have a stable of cameras but there's mine, my wife's, the phone and now the iPhone. Anyway, having just acquired the iPhone I dropped an entire folder of photographs into it to see what they would look like. Now I want to remove many of them, but can't!

The iPhone4 iOS4 User Guide is specific about this; it states:

You can delete photos and videos from Camera Roll on iPhone.
Delete photos and videos:
1 Tap in the upper-right corner of the screen.
2 Tap to select the photos and videos you want to delete.
The Delete button indicates the number of items you select.
3 Tap Delete.

Note that there's nothing about deleting photos that aren't in (or should it be on?) Camera Roll. And indeed the photos are shown under the heading Photo Library on the Albums screen. Selecting an individual photo in the album mode (with all the photos displayed as thumbnails) offers three options - Share, Copy or Cancel. Cancel doesn't remove the photo but returns to the previous state. In the individual photo mode there are only options for emailing etc. Am I stuck with several hundred unwanted photos for life or have I to go forth and bore?

Michael, you don't say how you put the photos onto the iPhone. I presume you have tried to take them off by a similar process?

I assume that the photos aren't on a removeable card, which would make life much easier! Other possibilities might be via iPhoto or iTunes?

Good luck.

If you used iTunes to copy the photos on to the iphone, when you sync the iphone again uncheck the option, Sync Photos and dialogue box appears which says that iTunes will delete from the iPod/ iPhone all photos that you have copied there. If you then wish to copy some of the photos but not all, create another folder with just the photos you wish to copy to your iPhone/iPod and the re sync with the copy photos option checked and then select the new folder. It's easier through iPhoto.

Lionel's solution was right! All sorted now.
