Printing from an iPad

Avatar Lionel Ogden
At the moment until someone writes a printing app for the iPad, files have to be transferred to a desktop or laptop PC for printing. This can be a bit laborious but for those with Mac desktops or laptops, Automator can help smooth the process. The following simple Automator application will print any file which is dragged onto it.

Open Automator from your Applications Folder
From the start menu choose workflow and the select "Files and Folders"
From the right hand list choose" get finder items"and drag it into the work area.
Then again from the left hand menu select "Utilities" and from the right hand list choose "print finder items" The default setting is to use your default printer. Drag this to the work area also and it will link under the first item.

Save this workflow as an application to your desktop with a suitable name.

Then when you need to print files from your iPad, transfer them by wifi or bluetooth to the desktop of your computer and drag them on to the Automator application and they should then print. If you have a number of files to print you can create a folder on your desktop transfer your files to that and then drag the folder over the automator application and the files will be printed in succession.

My thanks to Euan for his Automator demo at Dorchester yesterday for giving me the idea.

Lionel, does this mean you have bought an iPad? Or are you just whittling away at the reasons not to!

Does your Automator script do more than just dragging the files onto a desktop printer icon?

No no iPad yet.
Like many things on computers there is more than one way to print. This little automator application comes under that category I think.
