Unable to receive mail

On my desktop iMac G5 using Mail v3.6 a small triangle with an exclamation mark in it has appeared alongside the Inbox heading. When I click on the triangle a pop up box says: "There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account “POP Account” or try again. The server error encountered was: An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made."I can still send emails from the G5 and receive them on my MacBook but they don't return to my desktop G5.
Mail on my MacBook continues to work as required in every respect and that is on the same network via Airport.
I have done a restart which didn't solve the problem. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
