Sending emails via Mail v3.6 using OS 10.5.8 has got very very slow. Even one liners without attachments take about a minute to take off. What should I look into please? No problem receiving mail. (Using a G5 iMac.)
Hi Roy,
no suggestions yet from our network experts for you, and you don't offer much context, so here is a gesture in aid ;-)
on UK Broadband transmission is asymetric -- slower upload, faster download, but that isn't the problem. So here goes:
Mail is now at v. 4.2 -- at least for 10.6.x
System updates are best done with the (very large) Combo updaters rather than the quick and dirty smaller ones.
System updaters assume that you have given your System a health check before doing the update.
When did you last do thorough housework on your system drive? (permissions repair, safe boot, Onyx, etc.)
You might try re-applying the 10.5.8 Combo updater (and subsequent) after doing proper due diligence housework. This would not harm your system and may fix a problem.
Have you archived (backed up) your Mail for safety? Mail > Mailboxes > Archive
Have you rebuilt your mailboxes? Mail > Mailboxes > Rebuild
Are there any other symptoms (sudden problem, slowly getting worse, appeared after a crash etc.)
Has your drive less than, say, 12-15% free space?
Have you checked with your ISP or another user who uses the same one?
Is your connection wi-fi or other?
Are other broadband activities affected?
HTH,
Euan
Success after rebuilding Mailboxes, repairing Permissions and re-applying the 10.5.8 Combo updater. Emails now shoot off very quickly. Thanks Euan once again. Roy.
