I have tried most things now I am out of options.
Thanks

Hi John,

pressing alt+2 should do the trick.

Hi John,
for a more universal view of all those curious characters, go to System Preferences > Keyboard and look for the option

"Show Keyboard and Character Viewer in menu bar"

Tick the box, and the Union Jack in the top menu bar is replaced by a rther odd icon with dots (and an asterisk).

Click on that for access to Keyboard viewer and/or Character viewer.

Explore... (Jervis mark©) !

When you select a particular character or diacritical in a particular face / font it pops into the Character Info space.

With many apps, eg TextEdit clicking on this space will insert the character into your text without further ado.

Note that this does depend on the face / font you are using being properly matched to your choice.

Hope this is useful,
Euan.

Hello Ryan and Euan
alt+2 does not work on my iMac so I have resorted to using the character viewer from the menu bar.
Thanks for your inputs.
John

Hi John
just for EXTREME ;-) clarity, and not to patronise: the key combination is to press and hold down the Option (alt) key and while holding it down press the 2 key. The + is simply to show that the two keys are pressed together, and the + key should not be pressed -- phew, you know all that already? Shrapnel flying everywhere, take cover.

Mac people express this as
> Option (alt) + 2 <
or > alt+2 < as Ryan wrote it.

"Keyboard Viewer" shows this well, press Option (alt) on your keyboard to see. Try Command and shift too, alone and in combination. Then try it in Text Edit.

There are one or two more or less obscure things that could interfere with this, notably that the key combination has inadvertently been chosen for another shortcut. Beyond that, have you checked that in
System Preferences > Language and Text > Input Sources --British is chosen
System Preferences > Language and Text > Language > --British English is chosen
System Preferences > Language and Text > Text > --no similar key combination has been used for substitutions.

See you at the next Dorchester meeting anyway.
Euan.
