Can Leopard live with Vista?

Avatar Eric Jervis
Happy New Year everybody.

Although all my problems with modem/routers now seem to be over, as Leopard adjusts everything to suit itself, which has made me very happy, my daughter who uses a Bill Gates machine running Vista accuses my beautiful new G5 of having ruined her chances of getting onto the internet.
We have two wired routers, and she is now using the one I used to use. They both work perfectly on the G5 but neither will work on the Windows machine.

Reluctant as I am to believe such a thing, the evidence seems to indicate that Leopard has altered something on her router that Vista cannot change back for it's own purposes.
Typical of Microsoft's incompetence of course, but can anything be done?

The problem may not be due either to Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. You can normally use any combination of Macs and PCs on a simple home network. Could it be that you are trying to use two separate router modems on the same ADSL line? Others may correct me but I don't think that you can do this. Something to try is to connect your daughters computer to your Router-modem using one of the additional ethernet ports. It may have to be something of an untidy connection for the experiment but if it works the answer would be to make a permanent link. One way to do this is to buy a long ethernet cable and run it to where your daughters computer normally lives. Alternatively you could use the wireless facility of the router modem, but if you do not fancy the routine of keeping your system secure, another idea could be to use a Powerline kit, or similar, which uses the ring main of your house to create a wired network, more secure than a wireless network and there is no problem about sharing your network with the rest of Redruth. The Powerline units don't work beyond your consumer unit.

Thank you very much, Lionel, you've hit the nail on the head, we are doing that.
Powerline kit coming up!

Hi Eric, Lionel is right, you can't have two routers on the same ADSL connection. However you can have two routers on the same internal network. This however makes the network set-up very complicated, in a corporate world this situation is the norm but very tricky for a home set-up. I have even tried it my self, without much success.

The trick is to split the two networks by using different network address ranges, and create a static route from one router to the other. Bridging the divide. This is easer to say than do, as I found out.

Looks like a fun project for a club meeting. Needs two routers, and a number of connected Macs.

Happy New Year to everyone. Regards Andy Banks

Thanks Andy, H N Y, far too complicated for me though!

Eric - If you have a router, not a modem, then you will be able to connect many devices to it. This would include Mac's, PC's, XBox etc, as it is a device independent of any operating system. You just need to discover how the router is set up to connect the other devices.

Most routers are setup as DHCP server's out of the box. (What this means is, if the host computer is setup to also use DHCP, normally the default setting, they will automatically setup the host or connected computer with the correct settings for you.) All you have to do is connect up the Mac to the router and it should just work. The same should be for a Windows PC. I will do a how to document, with pictures using Pages. I will detail both Windows (XP) and Mac (Leopard and Snow Leopard).

I have two routers a Vigor 2500 ADSL Router which is plugged into the telephone socket, it also issues the IP addresses by having DHCP enable.

One of the ethernet cables from the Vigor is connected to a Linksys Wireless Broadband Router. On this machine DHCP has been disabled and the box has been allocated a fixed IP in the fixed range that the Vigor does does not allocate IP addresses in.

The subnet mask in both boxes is 255.255.255.0

This combination allows me to connect by ethernet cable to a total of 6 devices, plus the the ability to WiFi connect if I need to - I prefer not to use WiFi unless I have to.

The issue may be that the Linksys does not like acting as a Wireless Access Point. You could try using them the other way round i.e. with the Linksys acting as a wireless router and the Vigor as an ethernet hub but if you want occasional wireless but multiple ethernet, my suggestion would be to use the Linksys (and not the Vigor) but attached to an ethernet hub or switch.

I use two of the 8 port varieties of these:

Mick - I do not have a problem I was describing how I achieve what I thought was being asked for.

Sorry!

How do you guys know all that, and understand it?

Re: Can Leopard live with Vista?

Avatar Eric Jervis
I certainly don't understand it, but I did buy a Powerline kit on line for £38.16 (inc. VAT & postage) which consists of two gadgets to plug in to the sockets, and they work superbly well. We are both going to ***** it!
Over to you Euan.

I’m just trying not to get involved. Let me put down my virtual iPad and find my sticks -- they’re around somewhere… gotcha. Ah yesss:

Keep it simple -- and avoid ringworm infestation on the PC; that can be nasty as they feed voraciously on 240 volts and have been known to cluster especially in cold weather. Typically the first sign will be lots of asterisks… followed by random reference to known dazed and confused URLs.

You can-NOT be too careful...
