Snow Leopard and o2 Mobile USB Modem Dongles

Avatar Euan Williams
Snow Leopard and o2's MobileConnect are not happy together
o2 Broadband via Mobile USB Dongle (Huawei 169 and similar)

Relationship therapy...

Snow Leopard has built-in support for WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Networks?). Doing things the older Leopard way will probably cause Mobile Connect to crash.

If installing on Snow Leopard, go to the virtual CD image that appears on the desktop when the modem is inserted. Find MobileConnect, BUT use control-click > package contents > resources to set up installation, rather than opening Mobile Connect as a programme.

Going online with o2 MobileConnect app may not work. Use the Huawei Mobile Network Preferences Panel (rather than o2's Mobile Connect) to connect / disconnect.

Make sure every single letter (everywhere) is exactly as shown on the o2 install .pdf.

Set telephone number to -- *99# ,
Set account to -- o2bb
Set password to -- password (case sensitive)
10. Click "Advanced" (bottom right)
11. Set vendor to Other and model to HUAWEI mobile (System/Library version). Click OK.

If you > upgraded < to Snow Leopard (rather than a clean install) it may help to remove and send to trash the following files. Re-start (restarts can settle things down nicely).

Use the contextual (right click) menu to "send to trash", normal dragging doesn't work from System; authenticate if necessary.

Hard drive > Applications > MobileConnect

Hard drive > System > Library > Extensions > HuaweiDataCardDriver.kext

Hard drive > System > Library > Extensions > USBExpressCardCantWake_Huawei.kext

It may save confusion to delete any pre-existing Huawei network setups too.
Enjoy, and Happy Christmas!
