Fan running at Max

Avatar Lionel Ogden
Earlier today I woke my iMac from sleep and time machine started up, so did the cooling fan, which I had never heard before (my iMac doesn't work very hard) and continued to run well after Time Machine had done its thing. Restarting did not change anything and the fan continued to run. When I shut down the fan stopped but when after a few minutes, I switched on again the fan ran up to max and then slowed down to zero.

Is this just one of those things that happens occasionally or is it the harbinger of doom?

My iMac is an intel core two duo running Snow Leopard.

Could be worth resetting the SMC - see this link:

an interesting link Mick. On my iMac G5, we get the fan running fast occasionally although the computer does not lose responsiveness. It seems there is a similar way of resetting the SMU on my generation of iMac so I will give that a try.
