Yes, Lionel - I've done it. You're going to ask me how aren't you! From memory (it was a while ago) I used Handbrake or similar to get it into iTunes and from there it was just a drag & drop over to a connected iPod.
I used Handbrake to make an MPEG4 copy of a DVD and the imported it into iTunes where it played happily. I then plugged in my iPod to sync. Unfortunately it would not copy the MPEG4 film I had converted. Neither would it copy a film I had made in iMovie, but it was happy to copy a film also in MPEG4 format which I had bought from the iTunes store.
I did that at the beginning but with the above result. Perhaps the model of iPod that I have is selective about the types of movie it will accept. I have a nano series 4.
Success at last. I followed Doug's suggestion and used Toast to convert the files. This time they were imported into the iTunes TV shows folder from where they downloaded happily to the iPod. The file type is still shown as MPEG4 video file.
