I've seen a new(er) G4 that I like the look of, but it has a problem: Despite recently replacing the PRAM battery and re-setting the PRAM memory, the machine loses its setup & requires a few items (such as selecting the wireless network) to be entered on each restart. It will then automatically find the date and time from the designated time server.
Is this likely to be a minor problem, a middle sized problem or a major problem?
About five years back I bought a secondhand G4 867 with much the same problem.
Look for corrosion on the circuit board near the battery. On mine, it looked as if a battery had leaked at some point, causing damage to the board and a couple of tiny components.
Not wanting to replace the circuit board, I found Analogic Computers in Kingston, who advertised component level repairs. If I remember correctly, the repair cost about £125. It's still working OK.
Thank you, David and John, I'll give it the elbow. It's a G4 Dual 1.25GB, and reading between the lines of what the vendor says I fancy John's hit the nail on the head. I really wanted a G5 anyway!
I'm considering selling a G5 PowerMac - Dual 2.3GHz, 4 GB RAM, 250GB Drive. Not available right now but could be soon. Mail me if you're interested - address on the About tab.
I see what you mean. I don't know how to use that thing; it entices me into setting up a dot Mac account, which I don't particularly want as it's an unnecessary complication. My address is [undisclosed email]
